Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky, is widely regarded as the father of Japanese whisky. After traveling to Scotland in 1918 to study chemistry and the art of whisky production firsthand, he apprenticed at several distilleries, becoming the first Japanese person to master traditional Scotch whisky-making techniques. Upon returning to Japan, Taketsuru helped establish Japan’s first commercial whisky distillery, Yamazaki, in 1923 before setting out to pursue his own vision.

In 1934, he founded Nikka Whisky and built the Yoichi Distillery on the northern island of Hokkaido. He carefully selected the location because its cool climate, coastal air, abundant natural resources, and peat-rich environment closely resembled the conditions of Scotland, allowing him to produce the style of whisky he had envisioned.

While patiently waiting for his whisky to mature, Taketsuru sustained the company by producing and selling apple juice and other fruit products under the name Dai Nippon Kaju (“Great Japanese Juice Company”), from which the name Nikka was eventually derived. In 1940, Nikka released its very first whisky to the Japanese market.

Seeking to showcase another style of Japanese whisky, Taketsuru expanded the company in 1969 with the opening of the Miyagikyo Distillery near Sendai. Surrounded by mountains and fed by exceptionally pure spring water, Miyagikyo produces a softer, fruit-forward, and more elegant spirit that beautifully complements the bold, coastal character of Yoichi. Together, these two iconic distilleries create the remarkable range of whiskies that have established Nikka as one of the world’s most respected and award-winning whisky producers.
